Heavy Hitters: Residential, Mixed-Use Developments Deliver on Unique Product
In a city that's seen thousands upon thousands of apartments spring up in recent years, it's rare to find a product that truly stands out as something different. That's what Ascent Real Estate Capital and David Furman’s Centro Cityworks delivered in South End.
Centro Railyard brought smaller-than-average “micro” units with comparatively lower rents than other complexes in that pricey neighborhood. Two-thirds of the 91 apartments are studio units that measure about 400 square feet. And the development, in the same block as Beacon Partners' The RailYard development with office and retail space, includes “micro” commercial spaces as well.
The project was named a winner in CBJ's Heavy Hitters Commercial Real Estate Awards, in the category for “Apartment or Condominium Development.”
The redevelopment of Atherton Mill, also a project in South End with a residential component, was named the winner in the “Mixed-use Development” category.
Take a peek at these as well as the finalist projects in those two categories in the accompanying photo gallery.
The Heavy Hitters program recognizes outstanding local developments of the past year, taking into consideration each project's quality, creativity, the obstacles overcome, value to the community and other factors. Projects chosen as finalists and winners were featured in a CBJ special report on Oct. 23. In addition, key players behind those projects talked about the process of development in interviews recorded as part of a virtual event held on Oct. 16.
